Celebrating Mary Shelley: The 200th Anniversary of Frankenstein (A Case Display)
Curated by Diana Silveira Leite and Jana Zevnik, Graduate Research Associates

Not only inspired by the 26th Annual British Women Writers Conference 2018: New Directions, this Harry Ransom Center Reading and Viewing Room Case Exhibit is also in honor of the great author and her greatest work. Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818 to great acclaim and controversy, while speaking to the scientific community of the time. Mary Shelley (1797-1851) and her masterpiece have inspired countless artists in literature and the visual arts. This exhibit showcases both her early achievement in science fiction and her legacy as an influential literary figure drawing from such collections as the Percy Bysshe Shelley Collection, the Robert De Niro Papers and the HRC’s Book Collection.

Reading and Viewing Room:

The Harry Ransom Center’s collections are a source of inspiration and discovery available to everyone. Their Reading and Viewing Room is open to the public so that visitors may have access to manuscripts, rare books, and visual materials either for research purposes or personal interest. Each new visitor must go through a 15-30 minute orientation, which includes watching an orientation video, creating a Ransom Center research account, and being led through a Reading and Viewing Room orientation by one of the Ransom Center’s staff members. (You may save a little time by creating your research account beforehand by visiting this page.)

Reading and Viewing Room Hours:
9 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Saturday
Closed Sundays
(Materials paging stops at 4:30 p.m. each day.)

Plan Your Visit:
The Ransom Center staff is here to ensure you are able to view the materials you wish to see. Some book and manuscript collections are in remote storage and must be requested at least three days prior to anticipated use. Please contact the Ransom Center well in advance to request offsite materials by visiting the Contact Us page.

Materials from the Photography, Performing Arts, Film, and Art Collections may not be available on Saturdays, unless previous arrangements have been made to place them on reserve. Because of limited staffing and access restrictions, some materials may not be available due to size, condition, preservation and handling concerns, storage location, or security reasons.

To ensure you are able to view the materials you wish to see, please contact the Ransom Center’s curatorial staff well in advance with any questions about access and availability of collections in order to make the most of your visit.
